Marble Pot

The walk down to Marble Pot takes you through proper limestone country just outside Settle, where the ground beneath your feet tells the story of what's about to unfold below. This is a sinkhole - a dramatic collapse where a stream vanishes underground, and you're standing right at the edge of it watching water disappear into the earth. The pot itself is a vertical drop with steep sides, and the cave entrance yawns open at the bottom like something from a geology textbook come to life.

It's not a long visit - most people spend 20 minutes to half an hour taking photos and peering into the gloom - but it's absolutely worth the short walk from the car park. Kids find it genuinely thrilling, though it's the kind of stop that works better paired with something else rather than as a standalone day out.

Families camping at Orcaber Farm or the pods at Primrose could easily slot this in as part of a Settle loop - it takes minimal time and zero effort to access. The nearest town gives you a proper base for exploring the Yorkshire Dales, and this fits neatly into a morning's wandering before lunch. Bring a torch if you want to peer deeper into the cave, though the entrance tells you most of what you need to see.
