Bar Pot

Bar Pot is a proper caving experience tucked into the Yorkshire Dales just outside Settle, and it's not a tourist trap with gift shops and guided tours - this is the real thing. You're crawling through limestone passages, wading through underground streams, and getting genuinely muddy. The cave system involves scrambling, climbing, and squeezing through tight sections that demand a bit of nerve, which is exactly why it appeals to adventure types rather than casual day-trippers.

It's best suited to fit adults and teenagers with some outdoor experience. Young children will struggle with the physical demands, and anyone claustrophobic should stay well clear. You'll need proper caving kit - helmet, torch, and waterproof clothing - so this isn't something you decide to do on a whim. Most people allow three to four hours, though it depends on your pace and confidence in tight spaces.

Fresh from Settle, it works brilliantly as a contrast to walks around the Dales. If you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Dalesbridge is closest at three miles - you can combine it with easier valley walks to balance things out. The Settle-Carlisle Railway passes through town too, so you could make a proper weekend of it.
