Manor Waste

Head out from Tring towards the Chilterns and you'll stumble across Manor Waste, a modest historic site that tells you something proper interesting about medieval land management. It's essentially the earthworks of an old manorial settlement - lumpy ground, really, with ditches and raised banks that once formed the boundary of a lord's waste land. Not exactly dramatic stuff, but if you're into how villages actually worked centuries ago, it makes sense when you're standing there looking at it.

The site works best for walkers and history types rather than families after a big day out. Kids will get bored after twenty minutes unless you're specifically teaching them about Norman England. Allow an hour if you're thorough, less if you're just passing through. It's free to access and there's no visitor centre, so turn up whenever suits you.

What makes Manor Waste worth a detour is how it fits into a broader Chilterns ramble. You're close enough to Hill Farm Camping, Glamping & Caravan Site to make it a morning walk from base, and it pairs well with longer hikes through the surrounding countryside. Orchard View Farm and Chiltern Yurts give you accommodation options nearby too. It's not the sort of thing you'd drive an hour out of your way for, but if you're already camping in the area and fancy a proper walk that's got some historical weight to it, this delivers. The Tring area has enough going on - the natural history museum, the canal - that you can easily build a weekend around it.
