Mannering Wood

Dense woodland just outside Bethersden, Mannering Wood is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. It's proper forest - tall oaks, beech, and conifers creating a canopy that keeps things cool even on warm days. The forest floor is thick with leaf litter, which makes for quiet walking, and there are enough winding paths to lose yourself for an hour without any real effort.

Walkers will find this most rewarding. The terrain isn't demanding - no steep climbs or exposed ridges - but the paths do wind through genuinely dense woodland, which means you get that sense of being somewhere wild even though you're only minutes from the village. It's not a destination on its own; rather, it's ideal if you're based at Go Glamp nearby and want a proper walk without driving somewhere. Bring kids who enjoy pottering about spotting fungi and checking logs for beetles, but don't expect playground equipment or tea rooms.

Allow two hours if you want to explore it properly without rushing. There's no clear entrance fee information available, so check locally when you arrive. Best visited autumn or winter when the paths are drier and the trees are less oppressively green. Summer can feel a bit close and buggy among the conifers.

The wood itself isn't remotely famous, which is partly why it works. No crowds, no merchandise, just trees and quiet. That's either exactly what you want or a reason to head somewhere more developed.
