Whitewick Wood

The woodland around Bethersden feels proper old-growth Kent - towering beeches and ancient oaks that have been doing their thing for centuries. Whitewick Wood itself is a genuine working forest, not some manicured nature reserve, which means you get the real thing: muddy paths in winter, dappled shade on summer afternoons, and the actual smell of the Weald rather than a visitor centre approximation of it.

It's ideal for walkers who want to stretch their legs without needing a map and a packed lunch. The paths are manageable, threading through stands of mature timber, and there's something about the quiet here that makes you stop checking your phone. Families with older kids will get more from it than toddlers - there's no play equipment or obvious "attractions", just woodland - but that's rather the point. History buffs might appreciate the ancient woodland designation, which means some of these trees were already substantial when the Normans showed up.

If you're staying at one of the nearby glamping spots - Wildside Camping is only 3.3 miles away, or Wood View Farm if you want the full luxury treatment - this becomes a proper forest walk rather than a day trip. Morning light works best here. Allow a couple of hours to wander without rushing. There's no entrance fee or facilities to speak of, which keeps it refreshingly uncommercialized. Just bring decent boots and accept you might get properly muddy. That's rather the appeal.
