Calais Wood

The walk through Calais Wood isn't dramatic or particularly famous, but that's rather the point. It's the sort of place you'll stumble upon while exploring the Weald near Bethersden - a proper working woodland with decent paths that give you an actual sense of being in the Kent countryside rather than wandering around some manicured attraction.

You'll find mixed woodland here: oak, beech, and conifer plantations. The paths are straightforward enough for families, though they can get muddy after rain, so decent boots are worth packing. There's no café, no visitor centre, no admission fee - it's just you and the trees. That said, it rewards a slower pace. Early morning feels best, when you might spot deer, and the light through the canopy is genuinely lovely.

Allow an hour for a decent wander, maybe ninety minutes if you're taking photos. Kids under six might find it a touch dull after the first twenty minutes unless you're the type of family that enjoys proper outdoor exploring. For walkers and anyone after a quiet break from the holiday park routine, it's excellent.

If you're staying at Longberry Farm or Wildside - both within a couple of miles - this works as an easy morning walk before heading into the wider Kentish hills. It's not a day-trip destination on its own, but as part of exploring the landscape around Bethersden, it absolutely fits. Free, accessible, and genuinely quiet.
