Malpas Castle Hill

The earthworks at Malpas Castle Hill rise unexpectedly from the Cheshire countryside, about a mile south of Whitchurch. You're looking at the remains of a motte-and-bailey castle built by the Normans in the 11th century - basically a steep artificial mound topped with what would have been wooden fortifications. The bailey, or outer defensive ditch, is still clearly visible, and from the top of the motte you get a proper sense of why someone planted a fortress here. Views across the surrounding farmland are genuinely good, especially on a clear day.

It's free to visit and largely unmaintained in the formal sense, which means it's refreshingly undeveloped. The climb up is fairly steep and can be muddy after rain, so reasonable footwear matters. Most people spend 20 minutes to half an hour poking about - it's not vast, and there's no interpretive signage to linger over. History enthusiasts will get more from it than casual walkers, though anyone with an interest in Norman England will find it worth the short detour.

Families with younger kids might find it a bit underwhelming on its own - the novelty of climbing a muddy hill wears off quickly. But if you're staying at Bradley Hall Rural Escapes or Manor Wood nearby, it's an easy addition to a morning's exploring, especially combined with a walk around the local footpaths. The site sits on farmland, so respect boundary fences and check the ground conditions before visiting in winter. Whitchurch has pubs and shops if you need supplies, but there's nothing at the site itself.
