Malmains Wood is a proper slice of Kent woodland that rewards a woodland walk without demanding a full day's commitment. You get mature trees, decent paths, and enough space to feel like you've actually escaped the everyday - which is no small thing when you're camped nearby at one of the local sites around Selson.

It's the kind of place that suits families with young walkers more than serious hikers after peak-bagging dramatics. The trees provide decent cover, the ground's usually workable underfoot, and there are spots quiet enough to sit and actually hear something other than traffic. An hour to ninety minutes covers a proper explore without anyone melting down.

Walkers and anyone after a gentle woodland potter will find it worth the detour. Kids get a kick out of foraging through the undergrowth and spotting woodland creatures if you time it right - early morning or dusk tends to be better. History types will find less to grip onto here than you'd get at some Kent attractions, so don't go expecting medieval ruins or ancient earthworks.

The wood sits close enough to Selson that it works well as a morning or late-afternoon activity if you're based at Hawthorn Farm Holiday Park or Ham Hideaway Glamping. Combined with a mooch around Sandwich itself - which is genuinely worth an hour or so for its medieval streets - you've got a decent half-day sorted. Free to access, no facilities to speak of, and best tackled in dry weather when the paths aren't a bog.
