Elvington and Eythorne Heritage Group (Tilmanstone Colliery)

The old Tilmanstone Colliery near Canterbury tells a story most visitors to Kent never think about - that this corner of England once had a thriving coal industry. The Elvington and Eythorne Heritage Group have preserved what's left of the pit workings, and wandering around the site gives you a genuine sense of what mining life looked like in the early twentieth century.

You'll see the pithead gear, original buildings, and various pieces of industrial kit scattered across the grounds. It's not flashy or heavily interpreted - there's no theme-park veneer here. That's actually its strength. Walk around for forty minutes to an hour and you get the bones of what the operation was, without anyone overselling it to you.

This works best for adults with an interest in industrial heritage or social history. Kids might find it a bit static unless they're already keen on old machinery. The nearest town is Canterbury, which has proper attractions if you need a backup plan.

If you're camping or glamping locally - Ham Hideaway and Fallow Fields are both within a few miles - this makes for a decent half-day sortie that's genuinely different from the usual Kent attractions.
