Magnetometer Pot

A sinkhole in the limestone hills above Settle, Magnetometer Pot is one of those Yorkshire cave features that doesn't announce itself loudly but rewards the effort to find it. The entrance drops into a modest shaft - nothing like the grand caverns you'd see at Stump Cross or Victoria Cave, but that's rather the point. This is caving for people who want to actually descend into something real, not just shuffle round an illuminated show cave.

The pot itself isn't massive, but it's a genuine vertical drop into a cave system. You'll need proper gear and some scrambling ability - this isn't a stroll. The draw is watching how the sinkhole funnel works in limestone, seeing the raw geology rather than interpreted displays. Water cascades through in winter and after heavy rain, which adds drama but makes it trickier underfoot.

It's best suited to serious cavers or experienced walkers who fancy a bit of vertical interest rather than families after an hour's entertainment. Summer tends to be drier underfoot, though spring runoff is spectacular if you don't mind getting properly wet. Allow a couple of hours if you're taking your time. The real pleasure is being among the Dales' hidden drainage system, knowing you're seeing how these hills actually work.

Base yourself at Ribblesdale Pods or The Dalesbridge Campsite nearby and spend a day combing the limestone country around Settle. Magnetometer Pot sits alongside easier walks and cave visits, so it's less a standalone trip and more part of proper Dales exploration.
