Maes y Gaer

Standing at 407 metres above sea level, this grassy summit rewards the relatively short climb with proper views across the Menai Strait and beyond to the Snowdonia peaks. The approach from Llanfairfechan takes about an hour and follows a clear path that winds through typical Welsh hill country - bracken, gorse, and sheep-cropped grassland.

Walkers will get the most from this one, though it's hardly demanding enough to put off occasional hikers. The gradient's steady rather than punishing, and there's nothing technical about the route. Views from the top stretch across to Snowdon on a clear day, with Anglesey spread out below like a patchwork quilt.

Families with older children (say, eight and up) should manage it fine, though tots might flag on the return journey. Allow two to three hours for the round trip, including time to appreciate the panorama and perhaps a sandwich at the summit.

The beauty of Maes y Gaer lies in its accessibility from several nearby caravan parks. Craiglwyd Hall and Ogwen Bank are both well-placed for an early morning ascent, while Three Streams Glamping offers the closest base if you fancy rolling out of bed and straight onto the hillside. Weather can change quickly up here, so pack layers even on sunny days.
