Lyme Regis Harbour

The harbor at Lyme Regis is properly iconic - a working port that's been here since medieval times, and you can see why immediately. The curved stone breakwater (The Cobb, locals call it) juts out into the bay like some ancient sea creature, and it's genuinely impressive to walk. The water's clear enough to see fish, boats bob about doing actual fishing rather than just looking nice, and the whole setup feels lived-in rather than turned into a theme park version of itself.

It's the kind of place where you can spend an hour or three just wandering. Walk the full length of the Cobb - about ten minutes out and back - and you get proper views across Lyme Bay toward Golden Cap. The town sprawls up the hillside behind, all Regency terraces and fish and chip shops. Kids enjoy it because there's water, boats, and rock pools to investigate on the eastern side. Walkers will appreciate that it connects to the coastal path, which heads toward Axmouth or westward toward Bridport. History types should know this harbor's been working for around 800 years, and the Cobb was largely rebuilt in the 18th century.

Free to wander, no fees or tickets. Early morning or late afternoon gives you the best light and fewer crowds. Summer weekends can get rammed with day-trippers. If you're staying at Seadown or Newlands Holiday Park nearby - both within a couple of miles - this is an obvious afternoon venture. Golden Cap Holiday Park, slightly further out, is still easily accessible for a day trip into town.
