Lydney Park

The Wye Valley sweeps down from the Welsh hills towards the Severn, and Lydney Park sits right at that meeting point - a proper slice of wildness that most people driving through Gloucestershire miss entirely. It's a nature reserve that actually feels like one: no manicured paths, no visitor centre with overpriced sandwiches, just woodland and riverside where things are left largely to themselves.

You'll find yourself walking through oak and beech with the river below, spotting muntjac deer if you're lucky and plenty of birdlife year-round. The Wye itself is the real draw - that stretch near Lydney is tidal, so the whole character changes depending on when you visit. High tide brings a proper river feel; low tide and you're clambering over mudflats and shale beds, which kids either love or find tedious within twenty minutes.

It's the sort of place that suits walkers far more than families after a quick outing. Allow two to three hours minimum if you want to get anything from it. The nearest towns are Lydney itself (small, honest, nothing fancy) and Chepstow just over the border in Wales. If you're camping at Severn Valley Touring Caravan & Camping Site or Tudor Caravan Park, both within spitting distance, Lydney Park makes a solid half-day excursion. Don't expect crowds or facilities - that's rather the point.
