Ludworth Tower

The tower itself is a squat, solid thing - medieval stonework that's survived rather better than many of its contemporaries. Built in the 14th century as a defensive pele tower, it sits just outside Durham and represents the kind of fortification that was commonplace along the Anglo-Scottish border during times when raiders made normal housing feel dangerously optimistic.

What you're looking at is essentially a three-storey rectangular tower that would have housed a family and their valuables on the upper floors, with livestock sheltering below when trouble came knocking. The walls are proper thick - designed to withstand more than just rough weather. It's the sort of place where history feels tangible rather than theoretical.

Historically minded visitors will get the most from this one. Walkers using it as a waypoint between Durham and the surrounding countryside will find it worth a brief stop, though you're not looking at hours here - twenty minutes to half an hour covers it well. The tower itself is quite spare inside; there's no interpretation centre or gift shop nonsense, which some will find refreshing and others mildly frustrating.

Staying at Strawberry Hill Farm Camping just 1.3 miles away makes this easy to squeeze into a morning walk. If you're basing yourself at one of the larger parks like Castledene or Durham Grange, it's a reasonable drive. Honestly though, Ludworth works best as part of a broader exploration of Durham's border heritage rather than as a destination in itself. Go if you're already in the area and interested in medieval military architecture; don't detour specially.
