Lower Park Marina

The canal basin at Lower Park is where the Skipton branch line meets the Leeds-Liverpool Canal, and it's genuinely worth a wander if you're staying nearby. Narrowboats line the water, some painted in those traditional bright colours, others weathered down to something more honest. You're looking at maybe twenty minutes of proper browsing - enough time to watch a boat manoeuvre into the lock or grab a coffee if there's a cafe operating that day.

It's not a destination in itself, to be clear. But if you're based at one of the holiday parks dotted around Lancashire - Holgates Ribble Valley or Shay Gate Farm are close by - and you've got an hour to kill before lunch, the marina works. Kids will enjoy spotting the boats and perhaps watching lock operations if they time it right. The towpath is flat and easy, so grandparents and pushchairs manage fine.

Skipton town centre is only a short walk away, and that's where the real pull lies - market stalls, proper butchers, the castle looming above everything. Treat the marina as a prelude to a bigger afternoon rather than a main event. Free to wander, no admission charge, and you can park reasonably near the basin. Best visited mid-morning when the light's good and before the lunch crowd arrives at the towpath cafes.
