Lower Grateley Wood

The woodland floor at Lower Grateley Wood is thick with moss and last season's leaves - proper peaceful once you're past the car park. It's a straightforward forest walk near Salisbury, nothing dramatic, but the kind of place where you actually notice the quiet. The trees are mostly beech and oak, and in spring the bluebells make it worth timing a visit for. You can walk here for an hour or stay for half a day depending on your mood and fitness.

Families with younger kids will find it manageable - the paths are decent and there's space to let them run about without risk of them bolting onto a road. Older walkers and serious hikers might find it a touch tame compared to what the New Forest has on offer just down the road, but it's a solid shout if you want something close to Salisbury without driving far. The nearest proper town is Salisbury itself, which has all the facilities you'd need.

There's no fee that I'm aware of, and no strict opening hours - it's the kind of woodland you just turn up to. Parking appears free as well. If you're camped at Salisbury Hillside or Stockbridge View, both within five miles, you could slot this in as a morning stroll before heading elsewhere. The Meadow Glamping is slightly further out but still a quick hop. The wood works best as part of a bigger day rather than a destination in itself, but that's precisely what makes it useful for a park-based holiday in the area.
