Over Wallop Recreation Ground

The chalk grassland at Over Wallop stretches out in proper Hampshire fashion - open, rolling, and surprisingly quiet given how close you are to Salisbury. This is genuine downland rather than manicured parkland, the sort of place where you'll actually spot birds of prey circling overhead and wildflowers doing their thing without a hint of corporate management.

It's a nature reserve in the truest sense: managed for wildlife first, visitors second. You get chalk-loving plants, breeding grounds for ground-nesting birds in spring, and enough space to walk for a solid hour without seeing another soul. The recreation ground element means there are paths, though nothing fancy - this isn't about interpretive boards and visitor centres.

Walkers will get the most from it. Birdwatchers absolutely should come during breeding season (April to June). Families with young kids might find an hour here enough before restlessness sets in, unless your lot are genuinely into spotting things through binoculars. History buffs will appreciate the landscape's ancient grazing heritage, though there's nothing dramatic to look at.

Admission is free, naturally. Allow two to three hours if you're doing a proper ramble, forty minutes if you're just stretching legs. Early morning or dusk offers the best wildlife watching.

Stay at Salisbury Hillside Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, just over two miles away, and you've got a solid base for exploring the wider chalk downland. The Meadow Glamping and Stockbridge View aren't far either if you want something slightly more upmarket. Over Wallop works well as part of a broader walking holiday rather than a destination in itself.
