Lower Gorple Reservoir

The water sits still and dark, ringed by moorland that rolls away toward Yorkshire. Lower Gorple Reservoir isn't flashy - there's no visitor centre, no café, no obvious infrastructure - but that's rather the point. You come here to walk the perimeter, spot red grouse if you're lucky, and enjoy the kind of silence that feels increasingly rare.

It's a solid 45-minute loop on good paths, manageable for most abilities though the terrain gets boggy in places. The views back toward Pendle Hill are genuinely worth the effort, and on a clear day you can see across to Winter Hill. This isn't a destination that'll keep you entertained for hours - an afternoon is the sweet spot - but it's the sort of place you'll remember walking, not just visiting.

Walkers and outdoor types will get the most from it. Kids might find the walk a bit dull without an exciting destination at the end, though the water itself and any wildlife spotting breaks things up. It's free and unmanned, so access isn't an issue.

The reservoir sits handily between Trawden and Hebden Bridge, making it an easy slot into a wider moorland exploration. If you're based at Trawden Forest Glamping or Old Chamber Camping - both cracking spots - this is a proper half-day plan that justifies leaving the site. Combine it with a walk toward Wycoller or a pint in Heptonstall and you've got a solid day mapped out.
