Lower Betton Coppice

Walking into Lower Betton Coppice feels like stepping back in time. This working woodland just outside Shrewsbury is ancient - the kind of place where the trees have been managing themselves (or being managed) for centuries. You'll find proper mixed woodland here: oak, ash, hazel - the sort of mix that medieval coppicers would have worked with, and in some patches, locals still do.

It's a straightforward woodland walk rather than a manicured forest trail. Paths wind through, muddy in winter, dappled in summer. There's no visitor centre, no café, no facilities to speak of - which is precisely what makes it worth visiting. You get the wood on its own terms. Families with young kids will manage fine on the easier sections, though buggies won't work here. Serious walkers and anyone interested in woodland management and local ecology will find plenty to occupy them for a couple of hours.

Free to access, naturally. Best visited in spring when the woodland floor comes alive, or autumn when the canopy turns. Summer can be dense and buggy.

It works brilliantly as a morning outing if you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Stoney Acres is just four miles away, or Spring Field's eco camp if you want something a bit different. Pair it with a wander around Shrewsbury town centre for a proper day out. The coppice itself won't take all afternoon, but it's exactly the sort of place that reminds you why you came to Shropshire in the first place.
