Low Round Hill

Low Round Hill sits just outside Harrogate and delivers exactly what its name promises - a modest but genuine fell walk with proper views across the Stray and into the Yorkshire countryside. It's no dramatic summit, but that's rather the point. The walk itself takes about an hour from the base, climbing steadily through woodland before breaking onto open moorland where the panorama properly opens up.

This is brilliant for families who want to feel like they've achieved something without needing rock-climbing skills or half a day's commitment. Children cope well with it, and the paths are reasonably maintained, though muddy stretches are inevitable after rain. Walkers using this as a base for exploring Harrogate's broader walking network will find it slots in nicely between longer routes - good as a morning outing before heading into town for lunch.

Historically it's worth knowing the Harrogate Stray surrounds much of the approach, so you're walking through preserved common land with considerable local significance. There's no visitor infrastructure on the hill itself, so come prepared with water and suitable footwear.

If you're camping at Breaks Fold Farm Glamping or Olicana Park nearby, Low Round Hill makes an accessible first walk. It's genuinely worth the detour if you're in Harrogate, though I'd be honest - it won't hold your attention for long once you've reached the top. Thirty minutes to soak in the view, then down again. Still, proper Yorkshire fell walking on a smaller scale.
