Low Hows Wood

Walking into Low Hows Wood from Keswick feels like stepping properly off the beaten track, even though you're barely ten minutes from town. It's a genuine forest rather than a managed woodland trail - dense Lakeland conifers mixed with broadleaf, the sort of place where light filters down in shafts and the air smells of damp earth and pine.

The tracks wind through quietly. There's no theme-park polish here, no interpretation boards telling you what you're looking at. Locals use it for steady walks, dog owners bring their dogs, and families appreciate that you can loop through in under an hour without feeling rushed. The terrain's uneven in places - proper roots and stones underfoot - so it's not ideal for pushchairs, but older kids enjoy the scramble of it.

Worth the detour? If you're staying at Castlerigg Hall or Keswick Camping and Caravanning Club, absolutely. It's close enough for a mid-morning stretch without eating into a day of proper fell walking. On its own merits, Low Hows Wood isn't spectacular - you won't get mountain views or dramatic rock formations. What you get is genuine forest quiet, which after a few days in the Lakes can feel like a luxury.

Best visited when it's been dry enough that the mud isn't ankle-deep. A decent dog walk or a gentle warm-up before tackling bigger hills nearby.
