Low Douk Cave

Low Douk Cave sits just outside Carnforth, a modest limestone cavern that punches well above its weight if you know what to look for. It's not some vast cathedral of stone - the entrance is actually quite modest, tucked into the hillside - but once you're inside, the geology does proper work on your head. The passage opens into a chamber where water echoes off pale walls, and the light hitting the formations changes everything depending on what time of day you visit.

Walkers absolutely love this. It's the sort of cave that rewards a bit of scrambling and curiosity rather than demanding serious caving kit. You're looking at maybe thirty to forty-five minutes if you poke around properly, take some photos, and actually sit with it. Kids will either find it absolutely fascinating or get bored after ten minutes - depends entirely on the kid. Teenagers tend to find the vibe genuinely atmospheric.

Free to access, no gates, no visitor centre nonsense. That said, bring a proper torch. Phone torches are useless in caves. The cave works brilliantly as part of a wider Craven countryside loop - you're close enough to Primrose Glamping Pods for a proper adventure holiday. Storm clouds gather fast up here, so check the forecast before heading up. Flash flooding isn't uncommon after heavy rain, which transforms the walk from pleasant to potentially grim.
