Longwood Tower

The climb up to Longwood Tower rewards you with proper views across the Calderdale valley - the sort of panorama that justifies a slight detour from Elland. It's a straightforward walk to reach the tower itself, though the path can be muddy depending on the season, so wear decent boots.

Once you're up there, you get the full sweep of West Yorkshire moorland rolling away in all directions. On a clear day it's genuinely impressive; on a grey one it's still atmospheric in that brooding Yorkshire way. The tower itself is modest - nothing fancy, just a solid stone structure - but it's the vantage point that matters. You're looking out over genuine wilderness rather than manicured parkland, which some people love and others find a bit bleak.

Walkers will absolutely get the most from this. It works as a destination walk from Elland or as part of a longer moorland route if you're that way inclined. Families with younger kids might find the walk itself more appealing than the destination - there's not much to do once you arrive except admire the view and turn around. Allow a couple of hours return from the nearest parking.

If you're based at Elland Hall Farm Caravan Park or Holme Valley Camping & Caravan Park nearby, this is a worthwhile morning out. It's free to visit and takes you away from the holiday park bustle without requiring hours of driving. Fair warning though - it's windier up there than you'd expect, and there's absolutely no shelter, so bring a waterproof even when the forecast looks promising.
