About Longwood Reservoir
It's a proper working reservoir - functional, unpretentious, with decent paths running alongside. The walk takes about 45 minutes to loop the whole thing, longer if you dawdle on the dam. Views open up nicely from the higher sections, and the water itself attracts a steady crowd of birdwatchers and fishermen who know what they're doing.
Families with young kids will find the walking straightforward enough, though there's little in the way of facilities - no cafe, no play area, just the water and the sky. That's not a criticism. It's genuinely peaceful, which counts for something when you're camped at Holme Valley just down the road.
Timing matters here. Early morning or late afternoon gives you better light and fewer joggers. Winter can be bleak in the classic Yorkshire way, but spring brings life back to the reeds and makes the whole thing feel less industrial. It sits nicely as a half-day walk between longer hikes into the Calderdale Valley.
Not Instagram-ready, and that's rather the point. Come for an hour or two, bring a flask, expect nothing fancy and you'll leave relaxed. Free to access, no parking charges that I could find.
