Long's Lake

The water here is proper still on most days, stretching out from the edge near Royston like someone's left the tap running on a landscape that doesn't quite know what to do with it. Long's Lake isn't dramatic - no cliffs, no views that'll stop your breath - but that's rather the point. It's the kind of place that rewards a slow morning or an afternoon when you can't be bothered with tourist attractions.

You get good walking round the perimeter if you're after something gentle, and the bird watching is decent if you know what you're looking at. Photographers show up for the reflections, families bring the kids to count geese. The whole loop takes about an hour at a leisurely pace, maybe longer if you stop to actually look at things instead of just marching through.

It's free to visit and there's no faffing about with opening times - you're outdoors, after all. Best visited outside peak summer when it gets a bit warm and uninspiring, though autumn's quite nice once the light starts getting dramatic. Spring works too.

If you're based at Guilden Gate Glamping just up the road, this fills a quiet morning perfectly. It's close enough for a casual trip without needing to plan properly, and it breaks up the park routine without demanding much effort. Ashridge Farm is a bit further out but still reasonable for a day's exploring. Worth adding to an itinerary if you're in the area, though don't expect fireworks.
