Longlands Wood

A proper woodland walk rather than a manicured attraction - Longlands Wood sits just outside Belper and feels like the sort of place locals have known about for years without making a fuss. The woodland is dense and quiet, with decent footpaths threading through beech and mixed broadleaf trees. You won't find visitor centres or cafes here, which is rather the point.

It's the kind of spot that rewards a slow wander. The canopy gets thick enough that even on grey Derbyshire days it feels properly atmospheric. Walkers will find it genuinely useful - there are enough paths to string together a decent loop without feeling like you're treading the same ground twice. Families with young kids might get a couple of hours from it if they're the type to stop and examine moss and fallen logs. If you've got restless teenagers expecting wifi and attractions, they'll be bored within half an hour.

The wood works well as part of a broader walking day in the area. You're close enough to Belper for a proper lunch stop, and both Poplars Farm Caravanning and Carsington Fields Caravan Park are within easy reach if you're basing yourself in the region. Early mornings tend to be best - fewer people around and the light through the trees is actually worth the trip. Allow two hours for a comfortable circular walk without rushing.

Free to access, naturally. There's usually somewhere to park along the approach, though nothing official.
