Longdon Hill Top

The walk up Longdon Hill is short enough that you won't regret it, long enough that you'll actually feel like you've done something. It's a proper little peak near Rugeley with views across Cannock Chase that genuinely reward the effort - on a clear day you can see for miles across the heath and woodland below.

It's not a dramatic scramble or anything. The ascent is manageable, taking about twenty minutes at a steady pace from the car park, and the path is well-trodden. What makes it work is that it's never boring - you're climbing through woodland that opens out as you gain height, then suddenly you're at the top with space to sit and actually take in the landscape. On weekends you'll see families with younger kids, walkers doing the longer Cannock Chase circuit, and dog owners grateful for somewhere that's close enough not to eat up their whole day.

Time your visit for late afternoon and you'll have the place mostly to yourself. Early morning works brilliantly too if you're staying at one of the nearby camping sites - Cannock Chase Camping & Caravanning Club Site is only a couple of miles away, as are the glamping pods and farm camping spots scattered around. It fits perfectly into a broader explore of the chase area without demanding more than an hour of your time.

The views are the whole point here. There's nothing else at the summit - no café, no visitor centre, just you and the Staffordshire landscape. Bring a packed lunch if you're settled in for longer, otherwise it's a cracking spot for clearing your head before heading into Rugeley for food.
