Long Synalds

The walk up Long Mynd from Church Stretton is straightforward enough, but Long Synalds itself - that sharp little peak on the ridge - demands respect. It's a proper scramble to the summit, nothing technical, but steep enough to warm your legs and test your resolve on a wet day. The views across Shropshire open up as you climb: the Long Mynd stretches behind you, and on a clear day you're looking south towards Wales. Maybe forty minutes from the car park if you're moving briskly, longer if you stop to catch your breath and take photos.

This is a hill for walkers, not casual strollers. Families with older kids will manage fine; anyone under eight might find the final pitch tedious. There's no café at the top, no visitor centre - just wind, sky, and that satisfying sense of having earned the view. Free to climb, of course, like all the peaks around here.

If you're camping nearby - Small Batch and Brow Farm are both close enough for a morning expedition - combine this with a fuller circuit of the Long Mynd. Most people spend a couple of hours max on Synalds itself, then either head back down or continue along the ridge towards Pole Bank. The ground can be boggy higher up, so proper boots matter. Go mid-week if you can; weekends bring the crowds. Autumn's the sweet spot - less rain than winter, better visibility than summer.
