Long Ridge

From the top of this Yorkshire fell, the Wharfe Valley spreads out below like a green carpet studded with stone walls and farmhouses. Long Ridge sits just south of Ilkley, offering one of the more accessible summit walks in this corner of the Yorkshire Dales without the crowds that swarm Pen-y-ghent or Ingleborough.

The climb up is steady rather than brutal - proper walking boots recommended but you won't need ropes and crampons. Most people manage it in about 45 minutes from the nearest parking spot, though the final push gets your heart rate up. Worth every puff though.

Families with older children who can handle a decent walk will love it here. The views stretch across to the Three Peaks on clear days, and there's something deeply satisfying about bagging a proper Yorkshire summit without the tourist circus. Dog walkers are in their element too - plenty of space for four-legged friends to roam.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Bolton Abbey Estate or Olicana Park, this makes a cracking morning adventure before heading back for lunch. The ridge catches the wind something fierce in winter, so spring through autumn gives you the best conditions. Pack a flask - the summit's the perfect spot for a proper brew with a view.
