Long Pond

Long Pond sits just outside Dunmow, a proper little water body that rewards a quiet morning walk far more than it deserves credit for. It's the kind of place where you won't find crowds - just water, willows, and the occasional heron if you're lucky enough and quiet enough to spot one.

The pond itself is modest, maybe a kilometre around if you fancy the full loop, with decent walking paths that don't demand serious boots. It's genuinely lovely for stretching the legs after a day on site, particularly if you're staying at somewhere like Dairymeade Farm Glamping nearby. Dog owners get proper value here - there's room to let them off without stress, and the paths are manageable for most fitness levels.

What you won't find are ice creams, visitor facilities, or Instagram moments. This is conservation land, so it remains low-key and unspoilt. Bird spotters absolutely should come, especially at dusk when the water stills. Kids aged six and up will enjoy spotting fish and wildlife, but younger toddlers might find it a bit quiet after the first ten minutes.

Go early morning or late afternoon to catch the light properly. There's no entrance fee - it's just a local space - and you can spend anywhere from thirty minutes for a quick potter to two hours if you're serious about the walking. It pairs well with exploring Dunmow itself, which has decent pubs and is close enough for a morning visit before heading elsewhere in Essex.
