Long Oaklands

Long Oaklands is a proper woodland walk just outside Calne, and it's exactly what you want when you need to escape the car and stretch your legs without faffing about with parking fees. The forest itself is fairly dense - ancient oak woodland mostly, which means decent shade and the kind of quietness you actually remember why you came to Wiltshire for in the first place.

You're looking at maybe an hour here, perhaps two if you dawdle and take photos. The paths are well-trodden but not manicured, so wear decent boots if it's been wet. Kids will manage fine, though it's not a novelty attraction - there's no playground, no ice cream van waiting at the exit. It's just trees, birdsong, and the occasional scurry of woodland life.

Historically it's interesting if you care about that sort of thing - ancient woodland in England carries weight, even if there's no information board spelling it out for you. Walkers will genuinely enjoy it. Families with restless under-eights might find it a bit samey after twenty minutes.

If you're staying at The Retreat Glamping nearby, this is absolutely worth the short drive. It fits nicely into a broader Wiltshire itinerary - close enough to Calne for a cafe stop beforehand, far enough removed from the town to feel like proper country. Free to access as far as I can tell, which means there's no reason not to give it a go.
