Long Hill

The walk up Long Hill offers one of the better views across Fife if you're staying near St Andrews, and it doesn't demand much in return. It's a modest peak, nothing that'll wind you for hours, but the effort-to-reward ratio is decent enough. On a clear day you get sight lines across the Firth of Tay and back towards the coast, which beats staring at the golf courses round St Andrews town itself.

The approach is straightforward moorland walking - proper Scottish upland, not manicured parkland. You'll want decent boots if the ground's been wet (and in Fife, it usually has), but it's not technical. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might find the trudge tedious depending on their tolerance for exposed hillside.

Timing-wise, budget two to three hours if you're not rushing. It works brilliantly as a half-day venture while you're camped at Larick Campsite or Tayport Links Caravan Park - both are five miles or so away - and it'll burn some energy before an evening in town. Clayton Caravan Park is closer at under four miles if you fancy something in between.

Go when the weather's settled. The view on a grey, drizzly afternoon is thoroughly underwhelming, which is most of the year round here. Summer mornings offer the best light and the least wind. There's no visitor infrastructure at the top - no café, no facilities - so bring what you need and keep expectations reasonable. It's a proper walk, not a tourist attraction, but that's rather the point.
