Lodge Hill

Lodge Hill sits on the edge of the New Forest, offering one of those walks that feels properly isolated despite being relatively close to civilization. The summit itself isn't dramatic - there's no trig point or shelter, just open heathland with views across the forest that stretch towards the distant Dorset hills on a clear day.

It's a straightforward walk from Fritham, maybe 45 minutes each way depending on your pace and how many wrong turns you take on the forest tracks. The ascent is gradual enough that families with older children won't struggle, though younger kids might flag on the way back. The real appeal is the solitude - you'll often have the heath to yourself, which feels rare in the South West these days.

The moorland here changes seasonally. Spring brings wild ponies grazing through the heather, summer offers purple blooms across the open ground, and autumn turns everything rust and gold. Winter is windier and wetter but clearer, so you get better visibility.

If you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Longbeech or Ocknell are closest at under four miles - this works as a half-day excursion. Pair it with a wander through Fritham village itself or combine it with walks in the wider New Forest. It's not a destination in itself, but it's a solid addition to a forest holiday. Bring a map; the forest paths can be confusing if you're not paying attention.
