Malwood Castle Hillfort

The earthworks are what grab you first - two concentric rings of banks and ditches cutting across the forest floor near Fritham, remnants of an Iron Age fort that's been quietly mouldering away for two and a half thousand years. Malwood Castle isn't a castle at all, obviously. It's an archaeological site where someone, back around 500 BC, decided this hilltop was worth defending, and the soil still tells that story if you know how to read it.

What you actually get is a good brisk walk through proper New Forest woodland to reach the site. The ramparts aren't particularly dramatic - no stonework, no turrets - but there's something satisfying about standing inside those ancient ditches and imagining the settlement that once thrived here. You're looking at maybe 45 minutes on site if you're genuinely interested in the archaeology, less if you just want the photos and the walk.

This works best for history enthusiasts and walkers who don't mind the slightly underwhelming visual payoff. If you're camping at Longbeech or Ocknell nearby, it's a solid half-day excursion. Families with restless younger kids might find it a bit abstract - there's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards, just you and the landscape. Access appears to be free and open at all times, though you'll want proper boots and weather-appropriate kit. The New Forest National Park is only 3.6 miles away, so bundle this into a longer park-based holiday where you're building up a picture of the area's deep history rather than making it a standalone attraction.
