Lochan Torr an Tuill

A proper little mountain lake that rewards the effort it takes to reach it. Lochan Torr an Tuill sits high in the Highlands near Inverness, accessible via a decent walk through moorland that gets steeper the closer you get. The water itself is dark and still most days, reflecting the surrounding peaks and heather-covered slopes - it's the kind of place where you'll hear nothing but wind and the occasional golden eagle circling overhead.

This is walkers' territory, full stop. Don't come expecting a café or visitor centre - you won't find either. The appeal is purely the isolation and the views, which are substantial once you're up there. Allow two to three hours for the walk depending on fitness, longer if you're in no rush. The path can be boggy in places and there's genuine elevation gain, so waterproof boots aren't a luxury.

It works brilliantly as a half-day escape if you're based at Loch Ness Shores or Loch Ness Glamping - both excellent sites within easy driving distance. You'll want to do this on a clear day; mist turns the walk frustrating and the views disappear entirely. Spring through autumn is fine, though summer midges can be relentless depending on conditions.

Not for everyone, but if you enjoy wild places where effort translates to proper solitude, this delivers. The Highlands are full of these quiet lochs, and this one sits near enough to Inverness that it's an easy addition to a broader visit to the region.
