Nighean a' Mhill

The walk up Nighean a' Mhill is short, sharp, and surprisingly rewarding for the effort. It's a proper hill rather than a mountain - you're looking at around 700 metres of climbing depending on your starting point - but what makes it worth the trudge is the view across Loch Ness that opens up once you crest the ridge. The summit itself is windswept and bare, which actually works in your favour since there's little to block the panorama over the water towards Inverness.

This is classic Highland walking terrain. The path isn't waymarked brilliantly, and the ground can be boggy in sections, so go with decent boots and a map rather than relying on phone GPS. Give yourself two to three hours return, depending on fitness. It's the kind of walk that feels properly accomplished without demanding mountaineer skills - families with older kids will find it manageable, though younger ones might struggle with the steepness in places.

Timing matters here. Early morning means you'll dodge the midges and catch the best light on the water. Avoid wet weather if you can; the descent becomes properly treacherous. There's no admission charge, obviously - it's a Scottish hill - and the nearest facilities and accommodation are within easy reach around Loch Ness. The camping and glamping options at Loch Ness Shores, Loch Ness Holiday Park, and Inver Coille all sit within a few miles, making this a solid half-day outing if you're based at one of those sites. Not a peak that dominates your itinerary, but the kind of walk that reminds you why you came to the Highlands in the first place.
