Glas-Bheinn Bheag

The walk up Glas-Bheinn Bheag is proper short but surprisingly steep - we're talking maybe 45 minutes to the summit if you're reasonably fit, though the last stretch will have you working for it. It's one of those peaks where the effort-to-reward ratio actually pays off. The views across the Great Glen are worth the huffing and puffing, with Loch Ness sprawling out below and the mountains beyond creating that classic Scottish panorama.

It's ideal for walkers who don't want to commit a whole day to the hills. Families with older kids (say, age 10 and up) will manage it fine, though younger ones might struggle with the gradient. You'll need proper boots - it's boggy in places and the descent is trickier than it looks. Allow a couple of hours total if you're taking it easy.

Location-wise, it's brilliant if you're based near Inverness. The proximity to Loch Ness Shores Camping and Caravanning Club Site - just 2.8 miles away - or the glamping options slightly further out means you can knock this off as a morning excursion before exploring the lochs properly. It works well as part of a broader Highland walking holiday rather than a destination in itself. Go when the weather's settled; low cloud makes the views pointless and the path treacherous.
