Lochan Coire na Ciste

This small lochan sits high in the Nevis range, and frankly, you're going to work for the view. The walk in from Fort William takes you through genuine mountain terrain - proper climbing, not a stroll. Once you're there though, the water sits in a corrie like something from a postcard, surrounded by steep rock faces that make you feel very small indeed.

It's not a destination for families wanting an easy afternoon out. Walkers and hillgoers, yes. People after dramatic Scottish Highland scenery who don't mind a bit of graft, absolutely. You're looking at a good few hours round trip depending on your fitness, and the path can be rough underfoot. In decent weather it's absolutely worth it. Poor visibility? You might as well stay put.

If you're based at Glen Nevis Caravan & Camping Park - just down the road - this makes a proper day out. Ben Nevis Holiday Park works too, though it's a touch further. Either way, combine it with the bigger mountains nearby rather than treating it as a standalone trip. The lochan itself is intimate and rewarding rather than a major spectacle, but that's exactly what makes it feel less touristy than some Highland spots.

Go early in the season for clearer days and manageable snow cover. Late spring through early autumn is sensible. It's free to visit, naturally - you're just walking.
