Loch of Balloch

The water at Loch of Balloch sits quietly between rolling Perthshire hills, about twenty minutes' drive west of Crieff. It's a modest affair compared to the lochs you'll see further north, but that's rather the point - it's the kind of place locals know and tourists often miss.

What you get here is straightforward. A small, scenic body of water good for a walk around the edge, some fishing if you've got the inclination, and genuine peace. The surrounding landscape is gentle rather than dramatic, which makes it ideal for families with young kids or anyone not keen on a lengthy trek. You can manage a decent circuit in under an hour without hurrying, though many people just potter about for twenty minutes and call it a day.

Walkers will find it works well as a pit stop on a longer ramble through the area. The light changes nicely across the water depending on the time of day, so photographers might want to linger. Birdwatchers occasionally have good sightings here too.

If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Braidhaugh is closest at just over a mile away, or Comrie Croft a few miles further - the loch makes a pleasant diversion rather than a destination. It's free to visit, open year-round, and there's no particular best time, though autumn reflections can be rather nice. Don't expect facilities or crowds. Bring your own refreshments and realistic expectations, and you'll find it a genuinely restful spot.
