Loch na Toinnidh

Water this far north has a particular quality - still, dark, and somehow expectant. Loch na Toinnidh sits in the Highlands just outside Beauly, and it's the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. There's no visitor centre, no gift shop, no crowds queuing for photos. Just a loch, the surrounding moorland, and the kind of silence that makes you remember why you came to Scotland in the first place.

It's proper walker territory. The loch itself rewards a circuit - the paths aren't marked with the usual red waymarks, so you'll need decent navigation skills or at least a map. Birdwatchers get genuine value here; the waters attract various species and you're unlikely to be jostled for viewing spots. Fishermen come too, though you'll want to check permissions locally. Allow a solid two hours minimum for a full loop if you're not rushing.

Families with younger kids might find it a bit bleak if they're expecting a beach or cafe. Older children who can handle moorland walking will find it less manicured than the honeyspot lochs further west, which is precisely why it works. The nearest town, Beauly, is only a few miles away - close enough for a morning visit before heading elsewhere.
