Loch na Caillich

The loch sits in a quiet fold of Perthshire countryside, about three miles from Pitlochry. It's not a dramatic water - no Ben Nevis moment here - but that's rather the point. Loch na Caillich has the feel of somewhere locals know and tourists miss, which makes it all the better for a proper walk.

You'll find a modest car park and a clear path that loops around the water, taking maybe 45 minutes at an easy pace. The views are soft rather than spectacular - birch trees reflected in dark water, distant hills that come and go depending on the weather. It's the kind of place that rewards just standing still for ten minutes with a flask.

Families with young kids might manage the walk if you're patient about it; older children and keen walkers will get more from the outing. History types won't find much in terms of sites or ruins, though the loch's name (The Old Woman's Loch) hints at old local stories worth pondering. There's very little infrastructure beyond the car park - no tearoom, no visitor centre, no facilities - so come prepared.

If you're based at Tighnavon Glamping Pods or Parkdean Resorts' Tummel Valley site, this makes a sensible morning or afternoon loop. It's the kind of stop that fills time between bigger attractions without feeling like wasted effort. Not essential, but perfectly decent if you're in the area and want to stretch your legs without the crowds that dog the better-known lochs nearby.
