Loch Mhòr

The water here is properly dark and still, reflecting the Highlands with an almost mirror-like clarity. Loch Mhòr sits in its own quiet corner of the landscape near Inverness, away from the crowds that flock to its more famous neighbour. What you get is a straightforward loch experience - good for a walk around the shoreline, a spot of fishing if you've got a permit, or simply parking up to absorb the views without any fuss.

It's the kind of place walkers and photographers come back to. The light changes throughout the day and genuinely transforms how the whole thing looks. Early morning or late afternoon tends to be when it's at its best. If you're staying at Loch Ness Shores just down the road - about 2.7 miles away - it's worth a detour for a different angle on what this part of the Highlands offers. Loch Ness Holiday Park, another 4 miles further on, also makes it an easy reach.

Unlike its celebrated cousin, Loch Mhòr won't keep you for hours. That's not a criticism. It's perfect if you want a break from driving, a half-hour walk, or a bit of peace and quiet. There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so come prepared. The approach is through fairly typical Highland scenery - open moorland and forest - which sets the tone nicely. Families with young children might find it a bit sparse, but anyone after authentic Highland landscape without the carnival atmosphere will find it genuinely worthwhile.
