Loch Ballach

The water at Loch Ballach sits perfectly still most mornings, reflecting the Highland hills like a mirror someone's just polished. It's a proper small loch - nothing vast or overwhelming - tucked away near Beauly where you can actually hear yourself think. The surrounding landscape is pure Scottish Highlands: pine trees, moorland falling away, and that particular quality of light that makes you regret not bringing a better camera.

This is a walker's spot rather than a tourist attraction with facilities. There's no visitor centre, no cafe, no charge. You come here for the walk around the water's edge and the sense of having found somewhere genuine, not somewhere that's been packaged for tourists. It takes a couple of hours to do the circuit properly if you're not rushing. Bring decent boots - the ground can be boggy after rain, and in the Highlands it's usually been raining recently.

Families with older kids will manage fine; those with toddlers might find it a bit much. Serious walkers will appreciate the quietness. Birdwatchers often turn up here. Photographers could spend hours capturing the light shifts across the water.

It works brilliantly as part of a wider Highland exploration, especially if you're based at Highland Premier Glamping Pods just down the road. The loch won't take your whole day, which means you can combine it with other Beauly area walks or drive further into the Highlands. Visit early morning or late afternoon when the light's better and you're less likely to bump into anyone else.
