Loch-an-treel

The water at Loch-an-Treel sits perfectly still most days, a dark mirror reflecting whatever sky Scotland's throwing at you. It's a proper small loch in the Highlands near Dornoch, the kind of place you stumble upon rather than plan to visit, though once you're there you wonder why more people don't bother.

There's no visitor centre or car park with facilities - you just turn up and find a spot. That's part of its appeal, honestly. The loch itself is ideal for a quiet walk around the shore, and if you've got binoculars you might clock some of the birdlife that uses it. On a calm day the reflections are genuinely worth photographing. On a windy one, less so.

It works best as a breather between other activities rather than a full destination in itself. Spend twenty minutes to an hour here, depending on whether you fancy a proper circuit of the water or just a quick look. Walkers and photographers will get more out of it than families with restless kids, though a short stroll is manageable with children if they're not expecting theme park thrills.

If you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Dornoch itself has two decent options, or the Parkdean site a couple of miles out - this makes a nice morning or late afternoon venture. It's free, accessible any time, and feels like a proper bit of Highland Scotland without the crowds you'd find at better-known lochs. Not essential, but worth the detour if you're in the area.
