Loch an Fhraoich

The water here is absolutely still on a calm day - that dark, deep blue that makes you understand why Scottish lochs get under people's skin. Loch an Fhraoich sits in Argyll, a modest stretch of freshwater that won't take your breath away with drama but will definitely reward a quiet visit. The shoreline is rocky and overgrown, the kind of place where you half expect to see an osprey or a golden eagle, though spotting either requires patience and luck.

You won't find facilities or marked trails, which is precisely the point. This is somewhere to walk around, fish if you've the proper permits, or simply sit with a coffee and watch the light change across the water. It's the sort of loch that works best as part of a broader Argyll loop rather than a destination in itself. Tarbert is nearby enough to use as a base - you can grab supplies there and head out.

Families with young children might find it a bit dull after twenty minutes unless they're genuinely into birdwatching or fishing. Walkers and photographers will get far more from it, especially in late afternoon when the light softens everything. If you're staying at Muasdale Holiday Park, only 6 miles south, it's well worth the short drive for a leg-stretch and a proper look at proper wild Scottish landscape. Allow an hour, though you could easily spend more if the mood takes you.
