Llys Dafydd

The woodland paths at Llys Dafydd wind through a proper slice of Snowdonian landscape just outside Bangor. It's a nature reserve where you can actually walk without fighting through crowds, which feels increasingly rare in North Wales these days. The trails loop through mixed woodland with decent views across the valley - nothing that'll take your breath away in the dramatic sense, but the kind of gentle walking that rewards you with birdsong and the occasional glimpse of red kites overhead.

This works best for walkers after a quiet morning rather than families with fidgety kids. Allow an hour or two depending on which paths you fancy. There's something refreshing about a place that doesn't try to be anything other than what it is - a local woodland with genuine ecological value, not a tourist machine.

If you're staying at Ogwen Bank, just down the road, this is an obvious add-on to a half day out. The proximity to Llanberis Touring Park and the glamping spots further out makes it a useful break from the bigger attractions. Combine it with Llanberis itself if you want a fuller day, though I'd honestly skip the crowds and come here instead. Admission is free and there's parking at the reserve. Go in autumn when the light's softer and the woodland's actually interesting to look at.
