Llys a Chastell Tre-tŵr / Tretower Court and Castle

The twin structures at Tretower sit on a gentle slope near Crickhowell, separated by centuries of building ambition but still locked together by that peculiar Welsh determination to layer history on top of itself. You've got a proper castle keep from the 13th century - squat and serious - standing a few paces from a later medieval court house that's almost impossibly well preserved. The contrast is striking. The keep is all crenellations and thick stone; the court house is timber-framed domesticity, the kind of place where you can actually imagine people living rather than just defending.

Walkers heading through this part of Powys will find it worth stopping for. The site sits handily between rambles along the Usk Valley, and Crickhowell itself is barely twenty minutes' walk away if you want a proper pub lunch afterwards. History buffs will spend a good hour picking apart the medieval masonry and trying to work out the domestic layouts. Families with younger kids might find thirty minutes enough unless they're seriously into castles - the structures are modest compared to the mega-fortresses elsewhere in Wales, but that's partly what makes them interesting. This is the real thing, not a theme park version.

If you're camping at Cwmdu Campsite just down the road, this is an easy half-morning job before heading off to tackle the bigger attractions in the area. Pencelli Castle park is further out but still a reasonable drive. The site feels managed but not overly packaged - no gift shop nonsense - and the landscape around it is properly rural.
