Llyn Glan-rhyd

Llyn Glan-rhyd is a modest freshwater lake tucked away on Anglesey, just a few miles south of Bangor. It's the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for - a quiet water body surrounded by rough moorland and the kind of Welsh landscape that doesn't shout about itself.

There's a walking path that loops the perimeter, which takes about an hour at an easy pace. The views aren't dramatic - no mountains looming over the water - but that's rather the point. You get a proper sense of Anglesey's working countryside here, away from the coastal crowds. Birdwatchers genuinely rate it, and on a clear morning you might spot cormorants or the odd heron working the shallows.

Families with young walkers will find it manageable, though there's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of. It's free to access and open year-round - just show up. Expect to spend 90 minutes if you're doing the full circuit, less if you're just after a quick mooch about.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Ael y Garnedd or Anglesey Holiday Pods are closest at under five miles - it's a decent morning escape. Won't keep you entertained all day, but combined with a walk around Bangor or a coastal drive to Beaumaris, it slots in nicely. Go in spring when the water birds are nesting, or autumn when the light's golden and the place feels properly remote.
