Llyn Craig-y-Pistyll

A steep walk inland from Aberystwyth takes you to this glacial lake tucked into the Ceredigion hills - the kind of place that rewards the effort with genuine solitude. Llyn Craig-y-Pistyll sits in a proper mountain bowl, dark water reflecting slate-grey cliffs, and it's the sort of spot where you'll hear nothing but wind and the occasional sheep.

The walk up isn't trivial. You're climbing through moorland with views back towards the coast, and the path can be boggy depending on weather. Most walkers allow an hour to get there, maybe forty minutes back if you're fit. The lake itself? You stand there and you either get it or you don't. It's remote, moody, and utterly Welsh - no cafes, no facilities, no crowds.

This works best for serious walkers and landscape photographers. Families with young kids will find the ascent exhausting without much payoff, and day-trippers hoping for a casual spot to paddle will be disappointed. Summer's preferable simply because you'll stay drier, though the light in autumn is genuinely lovely if you don't mind mud.

If you're based at one of the nearby sites - Aber Camping or Woodlands Caravan Park are the closest - this makes a proper half-day excursion. It's free, as is everything up a Welsh mountain, and it sits well with exploring the wider Cardigan Bay area around Aberystwyth. Don't go expecting Instagram moments. Come for the silence and the walk itself.
