Llyn Bronllwm

The walk to Llyn Bronllwm rewards you with a proper mountain lake that actually feels remote, even though it's only a few miles from Abergele. You're looking at a dark, still expanse of water cupped in moorland - the kind of place where the light changes every five minutes and you genuinely feel like you've escaped.

It's a walker's destination, straightforward. The lake itself doesn't have facilities or a visitor centre - you come here for the walk, the views back towards the coast, and that particular quiet you get in the Welsh hills. Allow a good couple of hours for the round trip depending on which approach you take. Free to visit, naturally.

Historically it's been used as a reservoir, which explains why it feels so deliberately shaped compared to some of the wilder mountain pools further north. That doesn't diminish it though. On a grey day the water turns slate-coloured and moody. Come in late afternoon light and it's something else entirely.

Families with proper walkers will get the most from it. Young kids who need constant distraction might find it a bit bare once they've reached the water. There's no circular route around the shore, so you're retracing your steps, which some find tedious.

If you're based at Plas Farm Caravan & Lodge Park or The Beach Caravan Park - both decent spots near Abergele - this works as a morning or afternoon outing. It pairs well with exploring the coastal paths around Conwy. Worth fitting in if you're already in the area and fancy proper hill air without the scrambling.
